A textile map of Exeter, depicting the places that matter most to the city’s communities
Through a series of workshops at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM), community members and museum visitors collaborated with artist Aga Eden to create a textile map of Exeter, depicting the places that matter most to the city’s communities.
Using simple weaving and appliqué techniques, Aga invited participants to contribute to a large-scale collaborative artwork that celebrates personal connections to Exeter. Running through the centre of the panel is the River Exe, a defining feature of the city’s landscape and history.
“Rivers carry stories of movement, memory and connection. The workshops saw many hands and many voices flowing together, like the river itself.”
— Aga Eden
The finished panels have also inspired an online city trail, Stitched Stories: The Favourite Places of Exeter’s Communities, allowing people to explore the locations featured in the artwork.
This project was made possible with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players for helping to make it happen.
Open daily from 10am – 5pm (last entry 4.30pm).
