Exeter Custom House is at the heart of the relaxed Quayside and Canal area and our outdoor venue, The Transit Shed, is just over the road. We encourage accessing the area by foot, bike or public transport.


Visiting times

Summer Hours – 10am-5pm every day (April-September)

Winter Hours – 11-4, Thursday – Sunday (1st November – 31st March)

Admission to the building is free of charge, except for certain ticketed events – check the events page to find out more.


Car

It’s simple to visit Exeter Custom House by car from either side of the River Exe. Our nearest car parks both provide step-free access to our venues.

  • City Centre side: Cathedral & Quay Carpark
  • St Thomas side (recommended if accessing from M5 and A30): Haven Banks Carpark

Public Transport

Exeter St Thomas station is only six mins walk away, linking Exeter Canal and Quayside to all areas of the city, beaches and further afield.

The G bus service runs every hour on the half hour from the Quay to Exeter High Street, and the Green bus service also runs nearby

  • COVID-19 Response

    Exeter Custom House will continue to follow all national guidance relating to COVID-19. Whilst masks are not compulsory, please do feel free to wear them if you prefer. Hand sanitiser is available at various stations throughout the building and we follow a strict cleaning programme.

  • Gift Shop

    The Custom House includes a small Visitor Information Service for events, activities and venues on the Quayside. Small gifts, books and cards can also be purchased here.

  • Venue Facilities

    The Custom House offers a small but knowledgeable team of on site staff who will seek to provide assistance where required.  We do not currently have a cafe in the  building however we are surrounded by a huge range of cafes and restaurants on our doorstep. You will be spoilt for choice! Public toilets are available within a 2 minute walk.

Accessibility overview

We aim to make visits as simple as possible for people with disabilities or who need extra support, while working within the constraints of our Listed Building. We have recently undertaken a full access audit and are working to implement these actions.

Facilities

Step-free access to ground floor.
Lift to the first floor (ask at reception for access).
Accessible ground floor toilet.
We welcome registered assistance dogs anywhere on site.
Please feel free to leave buggies on the ground floor whilst you explore the building, although please note these are left at your own risk.

If there is anything we can do to make your visit easier, please do let us know. Where possible, we will look to make this happen. If it would help to come and look at the space prior to an event, this is no problem.

    During our standard opening hours it is open to the public to visit free of charge.

    You can find more on our “about us” page”. There is also plenty of information available in the Custom House iteslf, and you could take part in one of the free Red Coat tours which run all year round. The “Historic Quayside” tour starts and ends at the Custom House.
