The Barbary Corsairs & Devon

An illustrated talk by Dr Todd Gray

A lecture to proceed the publication of Barbary Corsairs & Devon, 1603 – 1649

The history of the Barbary Corsairs and Devon in the early 1600s is dominated by swashbuckling tales of blood-thirsty attacks at sea and slave raids on villages and towns across the West Country.

In this illustrated lecture Dr Gray reveals the results of the first comprehensive investigation into Devon’s archives. The documents challenges some of the assumptions that have been made of these North Africans who enslaved thousands of Devon men just as the British Empire was being founded.’
