Bringing together Marine Conservation and Maritime Heritage
A new festival is set to bring together marine conservation and maritime heritage at Exeter Quay.
The Sustainable Seas Festival will welcome individuals and organisations concerned about ensuring our seas and waterways are free from pollution.
Taking place on Saturday 20 June, between 11am–5pm at East Quay, by Exeter Canal Basin, the festival is free for anyone to attend.
The event is being organised by Exeter Heritage Harbour Group, a partnership of Exeter Canal & Quay Trust, The Friends of Exeter Ship Canal & Heritage Harbour and Exeter City Council.
For those interested in all things maritime and conservation, the event will be an eye-opening experience and packed with fun for the whole family.
The following activities and displays from participating groups will be taking place for people of all ages to get involved in:
– Traditional maritime craft practitioners
– Historic Vessels open to visit
– Lectures, talks and films in the adjacent Haven Banks Centre.
– Music and song
– ‘Get Afloat’ opportunities
– Free coffee and pizza for participants.
– Farmer’s Market in the Piazza
Gala Evening of Film, Music & Food
The days events will come to an unmissable climax with an unforgettable Gala Evening of Film, Music & Food in the Exeter Custom House from 5pm – 8.30pm.
Headlining the evening is Jo in the Water — an inspiring David-and-Goliath story following Jo as she transforms from passionate open-water swimmer into a determined environmental activist, taking on one of the UK’s largest water companies in a fight for cleaner rivers and seas.
After the screening, hear directly from the filmmakers in a special live Q&A, followed by a moving performance of Earth’s Child, the song featured in the film.
Also screening are two powerful environmental films:
Salmon Run
Tappermade
Together, these thought-provoking films shine a spotlight on our relationship with rivers, oceans and the natural world.
All filmmakers will be attending this unique event, which will be introduced and hosted by Tess Read.
And that’s not all! During the interval, acclaimed chef Gideon Hitchin, fresh from his sold-out pop-up at The Custom House, will be serving specially created themed canapés to complement the evening’s experience.
This promises to be a truly special celebration of storytelling, activism, community and our precious waterways. Tickets are limited, so don’t miss your chance to be part of it! Book here
